| San Diego Plane Crash Claims Two Lives, Triggers Fires in Neighborhood |
Tragedy struck a San Diego neighborhood on Thursday morning when a small private plane crashed into the Murphy Canyon area, claiming at least two lives and leaving a trail of destruction.
So this area that we're here, this is the YMCA. There's also a chapel that's nearby.
This has been the staging area for. those who were evacuated from this neighborhood, and this was essentially a meeting ground for all
of them to get together with what little they had to try to go over.
and thankfully again what we can explain is that it does appear that residents
have been conserved that no serious injuries have occurred.
Now what we've also been seeing is several animals that have been taken after the fact.
This does appear to be one of the animals that are with first responders and emotional support dogs.
But there have been several other animals that have been taken from this neighborhood because they got loose from their owners, got loose from their homes, and we've also seen that the homeless outreach vans have been here to transport people to the shelter provided at Miller Elementary, which is close by.
Hundreds or so people are estimated to be having to evacuate from their homes.
We're going to start to get a lot of these ring doorbell camera videos.
But this one shows the immediate moment after that plane crashed.
This is showing those flames shooting up into the air. There was a home that was on fire in front of the resident that had doorbell cameras.
So just added a context to what exactly people were seeing. They get woken up by this loud noise, all of the chaos is going around.
They look outside their window and they see those flames.
They sprang into action right away, grabbing a garden hose and doing whatever they could to stop the fire from spreading.
We spoke with some of those residents. One of them had to tell us.I had my bedroom window open and I heard the explosion, but I didn't know what it was.
I thought it was something down by Walmart and then we just saw orange,
but I didn't hear any sirens and we didn't hear sirens for a very long time
and that's what concerned us, and we ran outside and saw.
Just sparks flying up and
trying to make sure everybody was OK.
It was very, very scary.
Yeah,
and just from our vantage point here,
I know there's a lot of debris where Regina and Kenny have been, but you can see that debris that's there too could have easily hit somebody out for an early morning walk.
It could have been a whole lot worse.
The light post, you know, an electrical wire was clipped as well too.
And then as as my photographer Julio begins to pan here, should also point out again adding to the sort of danger of all of this is that it's not just the Flames and it's not just the crash itself but also the scary situation.
It's an important reminder of what these firefighters are going through right now.
They've set up this collection bin for those who have been there, made direct contact with any type of jet fuel, and also as kind of want to point around here,
as we come back to the neighborhood,
A family that's leaving may have been told that they need to evacuate from their home or maybe they were able to get in.
To see, but this is just, just to give you an image here of the folks that we're talking about.
These are families that are leaving with nothing on their back.
They're going to be right here behind this black SUV in just a moment.
You'll see them with their child, their young child in their pajamas, just leaving with absolutely nothing on their back.
I don't know the status of their home or exactly what it is that they went through,
but that's the image that we saw very early this morning from several people.
